How It All Started..

Through the Garden Gate opened its garden center to the public in 2004, but Sonia Cianchette’s passion for the plants started way before then. She grew up on her family’s potato farm in Corinna where she learned about cultivating soil, managing irrigation and controlling pests and diseases. As an adult she raised her own family on the same farm instilling the values of the farm onto them.

In 1984, her career path took her to Warren, Me., with her can do attitude, she set up her first greenhouse. This led to adding perennials, roses, nursery stock, shrubs and trees to supply her landscaping business.

In addition to making sure the garden center offers an abundance of selections, Sonia also offers landscape design services. With her forty plus years of experience in horticulture, she will work with clients to create a personalized design that enhances their property’s natural beauty. Whether the client wants a tranquil retreat, an outdoor entertainment space, or simply wants to enhance their property’s curb appeal, Sonia’s expertise will bring your vision to life.

In 1995, she returned to area to be closer to her family. In 2004 she established Through The Garden Gate on the family farm she grew up on, employing all her grandchildren before they went to college.

Today, as the matriarch, with 40+ years of experience, she shouts orders and is available to answer questions as a Maine Certified Landscape Professional and a Maine Certified Nurseryman. Her son has taken over operations so Sonia can spend more time with the plants she loves.
